Client Brief
  • Design a new fit-out for a small 2-storey apartment.

  • Existing brick walls and timber columns must remain in place and remain exposed as part of the apartment interior.

  • Public spaces within the apartment to be open and spacious.

  • A new interior staircase should be the highlighted feature of the new design.

  • Client will supply most furnishings, fittings, and equipment. Other pieces will be selected to suit the resulting aesthetic, which is industrial and street.

  • Recycled and reclaimed materials to be used where possible.

  • Ceilings must remain exposed where possible to allow for full floor to ceiling height.

  • Kitchens and bathrooms should be aligned between floors for servicing and acoustics.

  • Kitchen must include plenty of bench space including an island bench.

  • Entrance must feel large.

Building Site

This 3-storey face-brick warehouse is a heritage listed example of a federation warehouse, built in 1905. Additional were added in 1919.

Wood-framed windows have been retained on the Mountain Street façade. The rest of the windows have been replaced with aluminium frames.

The interior was repurposed from warehouse to office space, then to apartments.

Concept

The bright orange kitchen splashback sets the tone for the bold choice of colours throughout the apartment. The interior colour scheme is eclectic in concept to match the client’s existing furniture and artwork.

The island bench in the kitchen is aligned to allow whoever is working there to remain involved with activities going on in the lounge area.

Upstairs I dedicated to private living zones. Each bedroom has its own ensuite, while the master bedroom has an additional bathtub and extra-wide sink. All this provides a grandiose feel that belies the small footprint.

The lower floor is intentionally public and without walls. The interior stairs are encased by timber baton, maintaining the open feel while delineating separate spaces. The grand entrance into the apartment sets the open tone of the lower floor.

The ceiling partially exposes the timber floor structure above, accentuating the industrial vibe and making the spaces feel larger.
